Flowcrete Helps Protect Prairieland Plant with Hygienic Flooring
Nov 19 2013
- Prairieland needed a floor renovation to ensure a hygienic plant.
- Flowfresh HF boasts strength, durability and chemical resistance.
- Operating temperatures used in the plant are very high.
Prairieland Foods Inc./Quality Snack Foods, Inc. chose Flowcrete Americas to help them safeguard their processing facility with a hygienic floor able to withstand their intense working environment.
The pork snack maker, based in Alsip, Illinois, noticed that the epoxy floors installed in some of their production areas started to fail, with cracks and splits appearing in the surface.
The operating temperatures used in the plant to fry the pork snacks are very high and the epoxy products were not able to cope with the heat variations and cleaning regime.
The issue, identified as a potential risk for a food manufacturer whose hygiene record is of paramount importance, became a priority for the plant management team.
Gary Trepina, Vice president of Prairieland Foods Inc./Quality Snack Foods Inc., explained: “It was a failure of the wrong product in the wrong areas… we noticed within a year that the floor was deteriorating.”
“We have to swab our floors more often to prove to the government that we don’t have any bacteria growth.”
Concare, Inc., a preferred Flowcrete installer, recommended to Prairieland to replace the 12,000 sq ft of failing floors with Flowfresh, the flooring system installed in some areas of the production facility that had proven to withstand the food environment demands.
Flowfresh HF, the hygienic cementitious urethane system applied, is the ideal flooring solution to resist the extensive cleaning shifts at the Prairieland Foods plant which involves thermal shock from daily washes at 208°F. In addition, bacteria build up on the factory floor will be minimised thanks to the unique silver-ion additive Polygiene, which inhibits the generation of up to 99.9% of bacteria on the floor’s surface.
Combined with its clean credentials, Flowfresh HF also has the strength, durability and chemical resistance that Prairieland Foods requires to cope with the manufacturing of their products. Heat variations, heavy-duty traffic and oil spillage are challenges that the floor will have to face on daily basis.
